Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomThis was a beautiful experience. The temple is gorgeous. The rooms were very clean. Everything I needed was there. Joining in the meditation and listening to the morning chanting was restful. It was in a great spot, close to the road but calm and peaceful inside. It was a short walk to Koyasan village and many of the attractions.

EstoniaDue to the traditional architecture the walls are literally paper thin, so at night you will hear every word or rustle of your neighbors. The light from the hallways is also kept on at night and filters in through the paper screen doors, so bring earplugs and a sleeping mask and you’ll be fine. There’s nothing otherwise that can be done if you want to stay in a traditional building like this. For one night it’s OK. Also take note of the 9pm curfew.
The temple is well set up to receiving international guests and many of the employees spoke English well. The room was gorgeous with calligraphy decorations on the walls, and the shared toilets and bathing area were clean and tidy. The gardens surrounding the building are beautiful, the meals were quite nice and the highlight were the evening meditation and morning chanting. That is what you’re really paying for here, to be allowed into the practices of the temple.

ItalyWalls are very thin, we could hear the guests in the other rooms but curfew is very early so it wasn’t a big problem. The traditional Japanese breakfast served at 7am was kind of challenging for my stomach but it’s part of the experience.
The room is beautiful, traditional yet modern and well equipped. The temple is very nice and well located. You can easily walk to the main attractions in the area. I highly recommend to participate at both ceremonies offered onsite, as part of the full experience.

PortugalWe stayed in a Shukubo Traditional Room, the room it self is pretty and has a good space. However the mattress was a bit hard, we could feel the floor because it was so low. I know that is part of the experience to sleep on the floor, the problem was that the mattress wasn't confortable at all.
Get ready for a 14-hour spiritual retreat. Magical place where you can have a mini experience of what Buddhism is. With two meditation sessions, pre-dinner and morning, and two 100% Buddhist meals. From Osaka, transportation is done from Namba via the Nankai line. Despite being a long trip, train + cable railway + bus is done very well and is well prepared for tourists. If you have a lot of luggage, take the opportunity to only take what you need and leave it in the lockers at Namba station. English in Koyasan is better than Tokyo and other cities!

SpainFirstly, the monk in the meditation didn't speak good English so we didn't enjoy the meditation at all and was not comfortable, food wasn't that hot at time of food, all of it is vegan so if someone is not familiar won't enjoy it. Dinner was good but breakfast wasn't fulfilling for me and my partner. Overall, it's nice experience but I see it a bit commercial in my opinion.
Everyone spoke English which was surprisingly, the temple is very clean and the staff is very supportive!, it was very organized honestly and the experience of sleeping in a temple even for a day was nice and recommended.

AustraliaOur stay could have been a bit longer.
The landscape and architecture, the history and spirituality, were all beyond words to describe. Visiting and staying at the temple speaks to why we travel. This place is for those who love to meet and experience other cultures and who want to understand our varied histories. It's challenging to get to with a few train connections to navigate. If you have a bit of luggage, it's a bit trickier. Practically, maybe consider taking a bus if you have lots of luggage. The many train connections were a little challenging, but doable. And practice sitting cross legged on the ground before you go (particularly if you are not that flexible - although they make allowances and will provide chairs.

MaltaPillows are uncomfortable but since we stayed for a night did not feel like asking for different ones. Limited time that Onsen can be used Door closes at 9pm (there is a nice walk outside that is about 6km and leads to cemetery) and is a pity not going at night. If you are slow at walking try an alternative hotel.
The property is a slice of heaven with beautiful gardens and obviously the opportunity to experience the temple lodging.

CanadaIn some ways, it felt a bit modernized which made it feel less authentic to me. In a similar vein, it was fairly tourist-y (seems like a lot of Koyasan is), which was a small negative against the experience. I thought the bottom of the futon was quite thin, so it was a bit uncomfortable for me to sleep. But hey, perhaps that is more authentic.
Trying Shukubo is something I’d highly recommend, and Rengejoin was a nice enough option. The morning and evening prayer / meditation sessions were very nice. And the food was quite memorable as well. I was surprised by the staff’s English capabilities too.
