Interesting location on the top floor of a mall. The staff was friendly. The common area is really nice with all kinds of ammenities like tables to dine at, microwaves, water and coffee stations, desserts to buy, and a computer station with several computers at your disposal. The room itself is simple and clean. Somebody in another review commented the windows don't open, but ours did. We had fresh air whenever we wanted. Hotel was a pleasant 20min walk to Mastumoto Castle(must visit).

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
This was a wonderful family run Ryokan.
The staff were very warm and kind, gave good recommendations and offered bicycle rental to better navigate the city.
The room was clean, comfy and welcoming.
The public bath was excellent, designed very nicely and you can feel the good qualities of the bath.
After checkout they even gave their visitors a lift to matsumoto station !
To summarize, best service quality and overall kindness that I've received in any hotel I've been to (Japan or elsewhere), facilities are clean and the room is cozy.
The ryokan has an excellent shuttle service from Matsumoto station to the hotel. They also have a shuttle service to go to kamikochi, and they also offer a way back to Matsumoto. Súper useful and efficient. The amount of food is amazing and the quality was super good. They explained to us how to eat and deal with everything. Onsen hours are really long and great. The onsen is quite big and outside is amazing. The place is quiet with nice views.
Everything was clean as guests have to leave their shoes in lockers beside the entrance of the hotel. There is an onsen at the top level and even free ice cream for guests. Laundry wash is heavy duty and frer and the dryer only cost ¥300. Staff was always polite and greeted us.
It is fairly near to the Matsumoto train station and bus terminal. This made it convenient for us to travel around.
If you're looking for a budget friendly option without losing amenities like a private bathroom, western sized bed, mini fridge, etc., this hotel is perfect! The rooms have just enough space to drop your things, sleep, get for the day and such. The hotel is modern and clean, and the staff was very nice! Most locations in Matsumoto were about a 5-15 minute walk, including the station.
Excellent Japanese style hotel with tatami mat floors, yukata to wear, Onsen on the top floor, futon style bed, delicious Japanese breakfast, no street shoes worn in hotel. Staff was welcoming, helpful, and pleasant despite my limited Japanese language ability. A flat walk to both Matsumoto castle and the Yayoi Kusama exhibit at the Art Museum. A short walk from the train station.
Breakfast was amazing. A great mix of buffet Japanese and Western. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, it was a short walk to touristy Cat street where you can pick up some cute souvenirs and snacks, and we also walked a little further to Matsumoto Castle which was fantastic and well worth the effort. We chose to taxi to and from the train station (around $7 e/w)
Hotel is pretty new and modern.
Room was cozy and everything was super clean and shiny. On the first floor there is an onsen, you can also get a pajama and as many amenities as you want.
Staff was nice and professional, location was also good (only 10 min away from the station). Matsumoto castle is 5 min alway.
Bed was really comfortable, I had a good sleep.
Very affordable hotel located 2 min walk from the train station, just perfect for our one night stay in Matsumoto. The castle is just 15 min stroll from the hotel.
The hotel offers breakfast included in the room price, which was a very nice surprise and kind of unexpected.
More than any of the positives, the staff is very courteous and helpful.
Family friendly hotel. Excellent location, right across Matsumoto train station and bus terminal. Near to many restaurants and malls. Walking distance to Matsumoto castle and Nawate Shopping Street. Good selection of free beverage from 10AM to 10PM. Nice unblocked and serene view of the city and the northern alps from the restaurant.
Mitsubikiya is a lovely, family friendly ryokan in lovely Matsumoto. We stayed there with two kids (6 and 9) and felt very welcomed. The breakfast was also delicious; on the second day of our stay when we had to leave early for the alpine route, the owner sent us off with delicious, freshly baked milk rolls. Highly recommended.
Really nice hotel, better than the other 3-star places I stayed at in Japan. The room is spacious with a cute little sitting bench area. It’s a short walk from the train station and not far from the busy areas, with a good number of restaurants to choose from within walking distance. Staff is friendly and helpful.
A traditional ryokan where the owners still hand make the soba noodles for dinner. Great private onsen, included in your stay and amazing food.
A bus from Matsumoto station runs frequently and stops outside the property.
The staff were so considerate and helpful. A great stay overall!
It's a hotel for the budget-conscious, so expectations to be adjusted accordingly. Helpful staff who promptly attended to some AC troubles. It's clean, though very dated. Quite comfortable stay though at a very good price. Good location to Matsumoto Castle and Nawate-dori.
The owner of the house is very helpful and he will also give you information about Nagano travel. The hotel is very comfortable and suitable for experiencing Japanese-style houses. The price is also very cheap, making it the most cost-effective hotel here.
Location is one of the best charm point of the facility. Both castle and station are reachable within 10 minutes walk. And still in the quiet river side. Kura, Japanese old style warehouse, is now rare and sound me nostalgic.
I liked everything about this Ryokan. Exceptionally cheap without depreciating in quality. Fantastically friendly staff who were ready to help at any moment. Clean facilities and authentic Japanese feel.
This is probably the cheapest and the cleanest hotel I’ve stayed. Staff were really nice and helpful. You get a lot of Amenities. This place is really close to matsumoto castle like about 5 mins walk.
The food was an amazing experience - definitely the best food we had at a Ryokan in Japan. Location was perfect - best area of town and only a short walk from the station. High value for money.
